Today’s the day, SGV! June 26th, aka 626 Day. If you’ve never heard of this unofficial holiday, it’s basically our love letter to the San Gabriel Valley. The area code that connects us all from Alhambra to West Covina. What makes this place special? Always comes back to the food. The SGV isn’t just diverse, it’s ridiculously diverse. Where else can you get world-class dumplings, legendary pho, and a pastrami dip perfected since 1951, all within a 20-minute drive? For 626 Day, I mapped out the absolute must-try spots in the valley. Not the trendy Instagram places (though some of these definitely are), but the places that actually define SGV food culture.
The Heavy Hitters
The Hat (Alhambra) had to be first. They’ve been slinging pastrami dips since 1951. That’s older than most of our parents. The chili cheese fries alone are worth the trip. If you’ve never had their pastrami dip, you’re not really from the SGV.
Din Tai Fung (Arcadia) needs no introduction. Yeah, it’s a chain now, but this location still hits different. Those xiao long bao? Pure perfection. I’ve brought out-of-state friends here, and they literally plan return trips around DTF.
Golden Deli (San Gabriel) is where I learned what real pho tastes like. Their egg rolls are legendary. Crispy, fresh, and somehow always the perfect temperature. The kind of place where the owners remember your usual order.
The Local Legends
El Taco Man (West Covina) started as a humble taquero and became an institution. Their al pastor is incredible, but honestly, everything feels like comfort food. Proof that some of the best food comes from the most unassuming places.
Half & Half Tea Express (Monterey Park) was doing boba before boba was cool. They’re OG in every sense. Their drinks still taste better than the fancy new spots charging twice as much.
Porto’s Bakery (West Covina) – if you know, you know. The potato balls, the tres leches, the everything. Cuban excellence in the heart of the SGV. The lines are always worth it.
The Unexpected Gems
In-N-Out Original Replica (Baldwin Park) might seem like a weird choice, but hear me out. This is where it all started. The birthplace of In-N-Out is right here in our backyard, complete with a little museum. It’s SGV history you can taste.
Clearman’s North Woods Inn (Covina) is pure nostalgia. Peanuts on the floor, rustic vibes, massive steaks. It’s like stepping back in time. Where else can you throw peanut shells on the ground and call it ambiance?
Why This Map Matters
Creating this interactive map got me thinking. When you’re trying to understand a community, whether it’s food culture or business, visualization changes everything. Suddenly, patterns emerge. You see how these spots cluster around major streets, how they serve different neighborhoods, how they connect.
That’s exactly what we help businesses do with our territory mapping services. Whether you’re expanding locations, optimizing delivery routes, or trying to understand demographics, mapping reveals insights you’d never catch in a spreadsheet.
The SGV food scene didn’t happen by accident. It’s immigration patterns, community development, transportation corridors, and dozens of other factors that only make sense when you see them spatially. Same goes for any business trying to understand their market.
Your Turn to Explore
I’ve put together an interactive map showing all these spots, plus the rough SGV boundaries. Click around, explore, maybe plan your own 626 Day food crawl. Fair warning: hitting all eight spots in one day is ambitious, but I respect the hustle.
This list could easily be twice as long. I didn’t even touch the incredible hot pot spots, hole-in-the-wall Thai places, Korean BBQ joints, or Mexican bakeries with perfect conchas. That’s the thing about this place. There’s always another layer to discover.
So happy 626 Day, everyone. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or just visiting, take a moment to appreciate what we’ve got here. It’s not perfect, but it’s ours. And the food scene alone makes it pretty special.
What spots would you add? I’m always looking for my next SGV food adventure.
